National Leader of the Christian Heritage Party of Canada

By-election Musings in the Hat

On the “morning after” Voting Day in Medicine Hat, we survey the scene and reflect on the current state of our democratic institutions and the fragility of our social fabric.

On the good side of the equation, the man elected to serve as MP, Conservative Glen Motz, is a Christian and takes on the challenges of office with good intentions. On many issues, I believe he respects the values that we in the Christian Heritage Party champion. When Elaine and I stopped by his campaign office to…

National Carbon Tax a Senseless Money-Grab

Nobody likes paying taxes but most of us are willing to pay our fair share for the good of the country. Justin Trudeau’s recent threat to impose a national carbon tax if the provinces refuse to apply their own will do no good for our country, nor yet for the climate. It’s a money-grabbing power-trip, plain and simple.

Mr. Trudeau shocked the nation and provincial leaders—especially Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall—when he broke the news during a meeting of provincial environment ministers…

Conscience Rights and the Lessons of Nuremberg

“I was only following orders.” That was the pathetic plea of Nazi generals and accomplices of Hitler when they stood before judges during the famous Nuremberg trials in the aftermath of World War II. The world did not accept that attempt to legitimize their crimes. Neither should we.

In Canada today, and indeed, around the Western World, decisions are being made by judges and politicians that may one day call again for the judgments of Nuremberg. In their arrogant demands to force reluctant…

Throwing Marriage Away: Why Conservative Delegates Chose Divorce

By now, most Canadians have heard the news: delegates to the Conservative Policy Convention in Vancouver have removed from the party’s policy book its support for traditional marriage between one man and one woman. This decision sends a clear message that the party endorses other kinds of “marriage”.

Many saw this coming but others were blindsided by the 2-1 delegate division on this important issue. The question is why have party delegates taken this policy off their books and what are…

Calling Evil Good and Good Evil

Shakespeare’s famous line, “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet,” may be true as regards the perception of our physical world by our senses but the descriptive terms used to categorize human behaviours certainly affect our attitudes towards those being described.

TV advertisers know this. So do news anchors, lobbyists, and politicians. So-called “reproductive rights” are more easily defended than “taxpayer-funded abortions.” And,“investment in our children’s future” sounds way…

Separation of Mosque and State

As I write this, Canada—under the direction of our new Prime Minister— is hurriedly preparing to welcome Syrian refugees by the tens of thousands and Canadian military bases are being turned into domestic refugee camps. Muslim prayer mats and Korans are being purchased by Canadian taxpayers for use on the bases and plans are being made to build “worship centres”, known in the real world as mosques.

The pomp and circumstance of all this panicked generosity is to present Canada as a “caring…

Fearing the People

How do we choose those who rule over us? Does it matter? Can we change it? If we do so, will things improve? Our new Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, has vowed to change the electoral system and—so far—says he will do it without allowing Canadians to vote on it in a cross-country referendum. Is he right or wrong?

Many have written and spoken about this topic already and I offer my thoughts at risk of repeating what has already been said… so I’ll start with something that I have not yet…
